A Quick Guide to Effective Hashtag Use
Effective hashtag use requires research and consideration, and a more measured approach to applying tags to ensure optimal discovery with your target audience. Many still hashtag random words (#happy) or create their own custom hashtags within their post text (#IDontLikeHashtags), both of which serve little purpose.
While they’ve been a part of the social media landscape since pretty much the beginning, many people still don’t understand the use or value of hashtags, or how to choose the right tags to include in your posts.
So how do you go about conducting such research, and making the most of your hashtag opportunities?
The team from Social Media Today recently asked their #SMTLive Twitter chat community for their thoughts, which lead to the creation of an essential overview of basic hashtag strategy. Check it out here.
Here’s what is recommended:
1. Is it active? Check the hashtag activity to make sure its in use.
2. Niche hashtags. Research other hashtags used by others in your industry.
3. Is it relevant? Make sure the hashtag you use is relevant to the content you are posting.
4. Mix it up. Use a combination of shorter, mid-sized, longer and niche hashtags.
Social Media is a great way to get your business in front of your target audience, but you have to have the right strategy to be effective.
